Race Summary

SHADOW CAST unhurried early, raced out from the inside down the backstretch, was asked for run entering the second turn, responded to steady urging to bid inside the leaders before the final sixteenth and proved clearly best. BIJOU between foes early, raced inside around the second turn, continued inside and for the drive and rallied late. SISTER SWANK raced inside to nearing the drive, angled out in upper stretch, took over outside IDE BE A LADY before mid stretch and then had no final kick. CAPE TOWN LASS forced in at the break when MAY GATOR drifted in, recovered to saved ground until entering the second turn, moved out in the lane and showed late interest. HUMOROUS MISS devoid speed, circled foes for the drive and was gaining late. MAY GATOR veered into CAPE TOWN LASS at the break, was straightened early, raced closest to IDE BE A LADY until mid stretch and then flattened out. IDE BE A LADY set the pace to the drive, was overtaken and gave way. MY MISTY PRINCESS raced wide to the drive and retreated.

Summerly wins Silverbulletday

Eyes On Eddy fades in stretch to finish 3¼ lengths back
Sunday, February 13, 2005
By Josh Peter
Staff writer

Fans gawked at Summerly as the chestnut-colored filly with the tightly braided mane circled the paddock Saturday before the Silverbulletday Stakes.

She looked even more dazzling on the track, winning the Grade III $150,000 race for 3-year-old fillies at the Fair Grounds. Widening her lead down the stretch, Summerly cruised to a 3¼-length victory against Eyes On Eddy while covering the mile-and-a-sixteenth in a fast time of 1:43.79.

Local fans will get another chance to admire her March 12 in the Grade II $300,000 Fair Grounds Oaks, the final leg of the three-race prep series.

"I'm awfully excited to have her," trainer Steve Asmussen said. "The Fair Grounds Oaks is her next spot, and it'd be a super race for her to win."

Summerly, who went off as the 5-2 favorite, improved her stock as a candidate for the Kentucky Oaks, the premier race for 3-year-old fillies. The same can't be said for The Beter Man Can, the Louisiana-bred who on the strength of her upset victory in the Tiffany Lass Stakes was one of 23 fillies on a list of early-wagering interests for the Kentucky Oaks. She likely went from a long shot to a no-shot Saturday when she finished fourth, 2¼ lengths behind third-place finisher Enduring Will and nine lengths behind Summerly.

"The horse tried," said jockey E.J. Perrodin, who rode The Beter Man Can. "She ran as hard as she can."

Though Eyes on Eddy couldn't beat the favorite, she beat long odds just to get to the race. Following a morning workout in June at Churchill Downs, she got spooked, hit a washing machine, fell down, regained her footing and ran head-on into a dumpster. The accident opened a gaping wound in her chest and left gashes on her legs.

At one point, she had four draining tubes in her.

"We didn't know if she was going to make it," said Dennis Foster, who co-owns the filly.

But on Saturday, less than eight months after the accident, she made it to the starter's gate in good health and without further incident. But that was as close as she would get to the winner.

After breaking cleanly, Summerly followed Cee's Irish to the lead and stayed in that position until the final turn. It was then jockey Donnie Meche, aboard Summerly, heard the pounding hooves of Eyes On Eddy gaining ground and smooched into Summerly's ears.

"I pushed the button, and she just exploded under me," Meche said.

Leading by two lengths at the top of the stretch, Summerly widened her lead by another 1¼ lengths by the finish line. It was easy work for her jockey, thanks to the horse owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds.

"You just let her run her race," Meche said. "I let her break on her own, and she just finds herself a comfortable stride, like she's done it a thousand times.

"She's just an unbelievable filly, and she knows she's fast."

Now the gawkers know, too.

Race Summary

SUMMERLY three wide entering the first turn, was reserved just off CEE'S IRISH down the backstretch, bid midway around the second turn, gained the edge before the drive, surged clear and proved best while ridden out. EYES ON EDDY eased to the inside going to the first turn, was restrained until nearing the second turn, moved outside to rally, loomed four wide entering the drive and while no match for the winner was game for second. ENDURING WILL settled from the inside, raced within striking distance while just off the rail down the backstretch, got asked before the drive, split foes, angled to the rail and then lacked the needed finish. THE BETER MAN CAN under stout restraint early, raced close up down the backstretch, bid three wide for the drive but did not have enough late. CEE'S IRISH sprinted clear and to the rail to set the pace, held the lead until midway around the second turn, was overtaken by SUMMERLY, switched out nearing the furlong marker and then raced green in the drive. ELSIE LUCILLE moved to the rail early, continued inside thereafter and was no real threat. GLORIOUS PROSPECT settled early, raced off the rail down the backstretch, came wide in the drive and passed beaten foes. PRIVATE GIFT raced wide and was no factor. STEAL THE SHOW three wide around the first turn, raced wide down the backstretch, moved in a bit around the second turn and then faded.
