little. ELECTRIFIED forward from the inside, weakened.

| Race Summary |
|
WHOLE NINE YARDS pulled his way along and angled in
to stalk the pace, came out on the second turn, bid three deep into
the stretch, gained the lead outside rivals in midstretch, inched
clear and held under a strong hand ride. CHRISTIAN EAGLE also pulled
under a hold along the rail chasing the pace, came out leaving the
second turn and into the stretch and finished with interest for
second. NEWTON JOHN angled in and dueled inside, fought back on the
second turn and into the stretch, had the rider lose the whip in
upper stretch and could not match the top pair but held third.
GROUND CONTROL tugged his way up to press the pace outside a rival,
put a head in front into the stretch, battled between horses in
midstretch but weakened in the final furlong. DYNOUT chased three
deep on the first turn, was outside the winner then off the rail on
the backstretch, came four wide into the stretch and lacked the
needed rally. GOODWILLAMBASSADOR off a bit slowly and squeezed back,
settled inside then a bit off the rail, came out into the stretch
and was not a threat. RICARDO VOADOR pulled between horses early,
angled in on the backstretch and saved ground to no avail. BAROMETER
RISING unhurried just off the inside early, also angled in on the
backstretch, came out in the stretch and was not a factor.

SCOTT'S CAT unhurried early, moved up four wide
around the second turn, collared the leaders a furlong out and
proved clearly best. FIRE WOOD restrained early, advanced four wide
around the second turn and while no match for the winner was along
for second. YOUNG APPRENTICE settled off the rail, moved up around
the second turn, gained the edge in mid stretch and was game for the
show. LUDMIG close up from the inside, gained the edge in upper
stretch and then failed to sustain his bid. SIR CALLIOPE unhurried,
was no real threat. CHUCKLING saved ground. IRISH SONG forwardly
placed to the drive, faltered. ELLE'S SONG set the pace to
approaching the drive and then gave way once headed.

Summerly wins Silverbulletday
Eyes On Eddy fades in stretch to finish 3¼ lengths
back
Sunday, February 13, 2005
By Josh Peter Staff writer
Fans gawked at Summerly as the chestnut-colored filly with the tightly
braided mane circled the paddock Saturday before the Silverbulletday Stakes.
She looked even more dazzling on the track, winning the Grade III $150,000
race for 3-year-old fillies at the Fair Grounds. Widening her lead down the
stretch, Summerly cruised to a 3¼-length victory against Eyes On Eddy while
covering the mile-and-a-sixteenth in a fast time of 1:43.79.
Local fans will get another chance to admire her March 12 in the Grade II
$300,000 Fair Grounds Oaks, the final leg of the three-race prep series.
"I'm awfully excited to have her," trainer Steve Asmussen said. "The Fair
Grounds Oaks is her next spot, and it'd be a super race for her to win."
Summerly, who went off as the 5-2 favorite, improved her stock as a candidate
for the Kentucky Oaks, the premier race for 3-year-old fillies. The same can't
be said for The Beter Man Can, the Louisiana-bred who on the strength of her
upset victory in the Tiffany Lass Stakes was one of 23 fillies on a list of
early-wagering interests for the Kentucky Oaks. She likely went from a long shot
to a no-shot Saturday when she finished fourth, 2¼ lengths behind third-place
finisher Enduring Will and nine lengths behind Summerly.
"The horse tried," said jockey E.J. Perrodin, who rode The Beter Man Can.
"She ran as hard as she can."
Though Eyes on Eddy couldn't beat the favorite, she beat long odds just to
get to the race. Following a morning workout in June at Churchill Downs, she got
spooked, hit a washing machine, fell down, regained her footing and ran head-on
into a dumpster. The accident opened a gaping wound in her chest and left gashes
on her legs.
At one point, she had four draining tubes in her.
"We didn't know if she was going to make it," said Dennis Foster, who co-owns
the filly.
But on Saturday, less than eight months after the accident, she made it to
the starter's gate in good health and without further incident. But that was as
close as she would get to the winner.
After breaking cleanly, Summerly followed Cee's Irish to the lead and stayed
in that position until the final turn. It was then jockey Donnie Meche, aboard
Summerly, heard the pounding hooves of Eyes On Eddy gaining ground and smooched
into Summerly's ears.
"I pushed the button, and she just exploded under me," Meche said.
Leading by two lengths at the top of the stretch, Summerly widened her lead
by another 1¼ lengths by the finish line. It was easy work for her jockey,
thanks to the horse owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds.
"You just let her run her race," Meche said. "I let her break on her own, and
she just finds herself a comfortable stride, like she's done it a thousand
times.
"She's just an unbelievable filly, and she knows she's fast."
Now the gawkers know, too.

|
SUMMERLY three wide entering the first turn, was
reserved just off CEE'S IRISH down the backstretch, bid midway
around the second turn, gained the edge before the drive, surged
clear and proved best while ridden out. EYES ON EDDY eased to the
inside going to the first turn, was restrained until nearing the
second turn, moved outside to rally, loomed four wide entering the
drive and while no match for the winner was game for second.
ENDURING WILL settled from the inside, raced within striking
distance while just off the rail down the backstretch, got asked
before the drive, split foes, angled to the rail and then lacked the
needed finish. THE BETER MAN CAN under stout restraint early, raced
close up down the backstretch, bid three wide for the drive but did
not have enough late. CEE'S IRISH sprinted clear and to the rail to
set the pace, held the lead until midway around the second turn, was
overtaken by SUMMERLY, switched out nearing the furlong marker and
then raced green in the drive. ELSIE LUCILLE moved to the rail
early, continued inside thereafter and was no real threat. GLORIOUS
PROSPECT settled early, raced off the rail down the backstretch,
came wide in the drive and passed beaten foes. PRIVATE GIFT raced
wide and was no factor. STEAL THE SHOW three wide around the first
turn, raced wide down the backstretch, moved in a bit around the
second turn and then faded. |

COSMIC KRIS stalked IRISH SONG from early on,
ranged up turning for home, took over a furlong out and then was all
out to hold on. FIRE WOOD settled off the rail, rallied four wide
for the drive, loomed outside COSMIC KRIS inside the final
sixteenth, did not have enough late but lasted for second. INCOME
reserved early, raced between foes down the backstretch, lacked room
nearing mid stretch, got steered out but was too late. YOU FUNNY GUY
crossed to the rail early, continued inside until midway down the
backstretch, eased out before the second turn, came inside in upper
stretch, angled out and gave a late try. SCOTT'S CAT devoid speed,
circled foes in the lane and hung. IRISH SONG set the pace to the
drive, was headed and weakened. ZAMNATION angled in early, gained
the inside around the first turn, raced close up and then lacked a
rally. SKIP FIGHTER angled to the rail early, saved ground
thereafter and then faded. SUNSET BLUES showed little. DEBONAIRO
forwardly placed three wide, stopped in the drive.
