|
UNBRIDLE ME, in hand along the inside from early
on,engaged front-running ADMIRALITY ISLAND a quarter-mile out and
bested that one under strong left-handed urging. ADMIRALTY ISLAND
gained the lead early, raced in the three path, managed a slight
edge into the final furlong and was outgamed. DYNAMIC STORM, never
far back and five wide, lacked a closing bid. QUIET MONEY, outrun
for nearly six furlongs while near the inside, eased out to raced
between foes five or six wide entering the lane and improved
position. SPARK OF HUMOR, within striking distance and five or six
wide, flattened out when the test came. BLACK JACK ATTACK angled in
early to press pacesetting ADMIRALTY ISLAND, held on well to the far
turn and weakened thereafter. SCOTT'S CAT, near the inside between
foes, weakened in the drive. WHISKEY PARK bobbled while breaking
sluggishly, was used early to gain a forward position and tired
nearing the lane. MYTH MAN was never close. PROMINENCE raced in
contention five or six wide for six furlongs and weakened.

SAINT LIAM settled just off the early pace, was
well placed while four wide along the backstretch, was unhurried
leaving the far turn, took up chase after the leaders while
continuing wide entering the stretch, drew alongside FLOWER ALLEY to
challenge in upper stretch, surged to the front leaving the furlong
marker then edged clear under steady right hand urging. FLOWER ALLEY
raced just behind the early leaders, launched a rally three wide on
the turn, made a strong run to threaten in upper stretch, fought
heads apart into deep stretch and yielded grudgingly. PERFECT DRIFT
was unhurried while between horses, launched a bid leaving the turn,
angled out in upper stretch then closed late to gain a share. SUPER
FROLIC stumbled badly at the start, was unhurried for six furlongs,
closed ground steadily along the rail to reach contention on the
turn then finished willingly along the inside. SUAVE pressed the
pace from outside for a mile, battled heads apart for the lead in
upper stretch then weakened from his early efforts. CHOCTAW NATION
was outrun early while saving ground, swung six wide while gaining
on the turn then finished evenly. STARCRAFT (NZ) failed to mount a
serious rally while racing wide. SIR SHACKLETON never reached
contention while wide on the turn. SUN KING dueled along the rail
for a mile and gave way. BORREGO was outrun early, lodged a mild
five wide move between horses on the turn and flattened out.
ORATORIO (IRE) saved ground to no avail. JACK SULLIVAN never reached
contention. A BIT O'GOLD raced wide throughout.

| Race Summary |
|
LEGENDARY STAR took back after the break and
trailed to the second turn, came two wide into the lane, angled out
approaching the furlong pole, continued to respond and was up in the
final stages from the extreme outside. SANTIAGO EXPRESS tracked the
dueling leaders from the rail throughout, waited for room inside
FUTURE HIT at the quarter pole, came through an opening in the upper
stretch to gain command leaving the furlong pole but could not quite
hold off the winner. TAGUS raced unhurried to the second turn while
racing just off the rail, entered the lane behind a wall of horses,
split foes at the sixteenth pole and closed willingly. MINTURN
pulled hard in the early going while forwardly placed and four wide
to the backstretch, was taken back slightly after a half mile but
was forced four wide again on the second turn, offered a menacing
bid approaching the eighth pole then lost some of his punch in the
late stages. FUTURE HIT set all of the pace from the inside to the
head of the lane and gradually weakened. FU MAN SLEW dueled outside
FUTURE HIT to the stretch and slackened. STAR OF GAIA stalked the
pace three wide throughout and came up empty in the lane. SCORCHER
was well placed from the rail for a half mile and gave way steadily.

| Race Summary |
|
FOR ALL WE KNOW drifted in at the break and bumped
lightly with COMACINA, was never far back while near the inside
between rivals, was put to a drive about the five-sixteenths pole,
advanced four wide into the stretch, took over nearing the final
sixteenth and drove clear under strong handling. FLYING GLITTER went
up inside of front-running SIMPLY BECAUSE early to gain a forward
position, reached the front two or three wide approaching the final
quarter, showed the way into the final furlong and wasn't a match
late for the winner. CAREER ORIENTED, outsprinted for a half while
racing in behind horses, moved six wide entering the upper stretch,
reached easy striking distance but gained only slightly in the late
going. SIMPLY BECAUSE gained the advantage early, raced four or five
wide, lost the edge to FLYING GLITTER from the inside nearing the
stretch and gradually weakened. COMACINA, bumped lightly at the
break by FOR ALL WE KNOW, gained a forward position early, fell back
on the turn while remaining near the inside, then bested the rest
while not a threat. HIDE AND CHIC, well placed four or five wide to
the stretch, flattened out when straightened for the drive. WINNING
SEASON raced six or seven wide and failed to threaten. LEAVE ME
ALONE, five or six wide, raced within striking distance to the
stretch and came up empty. EYES ON EDDY never reached contention.
SWEDE, three or four wide while between foes in a forward position
for a half, weakened soon after. AMAZING BUY was outrun.

|
BRIVIESCA (GB), never far back while following the
leaders six wide under rating, inched to challenge approaching the
final quarter, took over, drew clear, bobbled leaving the sixteenth
pole while drifting out and held sway under strong handling. CAPE
TOWN LASS, in contention always, eased out seven wide on the
backstretch, edged in a bit on the far turn, came out again to be
eight wide for the drive, loomed menacingly outside the winner but
couldn't muster the needed response. LOUVE ROYALE (IRE), off the
inside from the beginning and in hand, raced seven wide on the
backstretch, continued well out in the course entering the upper
stretch but could gain only slightly at the end. STRIKE ME LUCKY
tracked front-running BEAU HAPPY from early on while five wide,
remained a factor into the upper stretch but failed to respond.
OCTOBER GLORY (IRE), five wide early while unhurried, angled to the
rail to make a run on the far turn, was asked for her best nearing
the final quarter but was empty when straightened into the stretch.
BEAU HAPPY gained a clear advantage early, relaxed on an easy lead
through modest fractions while two or three wide and weakened a
quarter-mile out. JORDYN MACOMA gained a forward position at once,
raced five or six wide, pulled the rider up after front-running BEAU
HAPPY upon going a mile, battled on about even terms to the lane and
faltered. SHEER LUCK, four or five wide, tired on the far turn.

Borrego has arrive at Belmont
by
Ralls
on Mon 17 Oct 2005 07:52 AM AKDT
Borrego has arrived at Belmont
The Triple Crown trail beckoned last year, and Beau Greely traveled down it
with Borrego. After leaving their home base of California, they made stops
in Louisiana and Arkansas, before moving on to the Kentucky Derby and
Preakness Stakes. But the journey ended there, before going to Belmont
Park.
A year later, they have arrived.
When 2005 dawned, Greely - who trains, co-owns, and is one of the breeders
of Borrego - decided to have a travel schedule opposite of last year. He
and
Borrego would stay home in California the entire year until the fall, then
go to New York. The result is that Borrego is thriving as he nears his
biggest race of the year, the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 29
at
Belmont Park. He comes off successive victories in $1 million races, the
Pacific Classic at Del Mar and the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.
"I'm pretty excited," Greely said from New York. "It's a good spot to be
in.
It's one of the things you dream about as a kid."
Borrego, 4, always has raced with the best of the division. He was second
in
the Louisiana Derby to Wimbledon, second to Smarty Jones in the Arkansas
Derby, third to Rock Hard Ten in the Santa Anita Handicap, and second to
Lava Man in the Hollywood Gold Cup. He also was second in the Super Derby,
Sham Stakes, and El Cajon Stakes, and third in the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap.
When he came into the Pacific Classic, he had placed in stakes races eight
times, but had never won a stakes race. He had three wins - against maidens
and twice in allowance company - from 17 starts. He was widely perceived as
an underachiever.
Not any more. As good as he ran in the Pacific Classic, Borrego took it to
another level in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, inhaling his rivals and winning
under wraps.
"That race was special," Greely said. "It wasn't just a Breeders' Cup prep.
It's a huge race on its own, especially with a horse you want to be a
stallion. He was doing that well, but he fooled me, in a good way.
"I always knew he was that good. I just wondered when he'd show it," Greely
said. "He'd never run a bad race against a good horse. I'm not bragging.
It's not like I did a great training job. It's just that the horse came
into
his own. He matured, and got better."
In fact, Borrego may have been an overachiever last year. Greely, 34, has
been training on his own for eight years, but is an old soul. He comes from
a prominent Kentucky family and worked as an assistant to Richard Mandella.
Patience, at least in terms of training, was drilled into him. Since
Borrego
was a May foal and didn't even have his actual third birthday until after
the Preakness, Greely never set out to turn him into a Triple Crown
contender. Borrego just kept taking the necessary steps, and Greely kept
going along for the ride until it became apparent, after the Preakness,
that
Borrego was not quite ready for prime time.
"I think the others in front of him were just a little better in terms of
ability at that time, and they were a little more mature age-wise," Greely
said.
After failing to win in eight starts last year, Borrego has won three times
in seven starts this year and has finished out of the money just once.
Staying at home the first nine months of the year has left Borrego, a son
of
El Prado, fresh for his late-season objectives.
"There was no need to travel. It's just more stress on a horse," Greely
said. "And when you have a handicap horse in California, why leave unless
you're dodging someone? He ran in the Big 'Cap, the Gold Cup, the preps for
those races. And he was right there."
Now, Greely is just marking time until the Classic. He had scheduled a work
for Wednesday at Belmont, but scratched that because of the wet weather.
It's a minor inconvenience. Borrego has never been a fancy work horse, and
considering he has raced all year and just won over the track, it's not
like
Greely is playing catch up. No, the management of Borrego the first nine
months of the year is paying dividends now.
"I could not be happier," Greely said.

WITHIN REASON sped to the early lead, angled in and
set the pace inside, dueled along the rail on the turn and into the
stretch, inched away in midstretch and held gamely under urging.
PRICELY GEM stalked outside a rival, bid alongside the winner and
dueled on the turn and into the stretch, could not match that one in
the drive but was clearly second best. SEIZE COMMAND stalked the
pace three deep then outside, continued off the rail on the turn,
came out into the stretch and bested the others. DIXIE BANKER
stalked between horses then outside a rival on the turn and lacked a
response in the stretch. TIMBER TIME settled off the rail on the
backstretch and turn, came out some in the stretch and did not
rally. KOBAYASHI broke a bit slowly, settled just off the inside and
failed to menace. DOUBLE GALORE stalked the pace along the inside,
dropped back on the turn and weakened. |

DO NOT ASSUME broke alertly then took a favorable
striking position just off the dueling leaders from the inside,
eased off the rail into the second turn, circled the leaders three
wide to take command at the quarter pole, drew clear in the upper
stretch then extended his advantage while being kept to his task.
LEGENDARY STAR was not asked for speed in the early going, responded
when called upon on the second turn, rallied three wide into the
stretch but lost much of his punch in the final sixteenth. TEXAS
TOBY K was void of early speed as usual, circled rivals four wide on
the second turn but passed mainly tiring horses. BLADE EXPRESS was
hustled in the early going to gain a short lead into the first turn,
dueled with BOLD GRILL to the second turn, disposed of that rival
but had little response when challenged by the winner nearing the
quarter pole. TAGUS was permitted to settle in the early stages then
had no response when the test came. BOLD GRILL raced up outside to
prompt the pace to the second turn but had little left. MANTON
stalked the leaders from just off the rail to the second turn and
gave out. DIN'S DYNASTY was forwardly placed while four wide to the
backstretch, but faded steadily nearing the half pole.

PROPOSED sped to the early lead, set a pressured
pace inside, inched away on the second turn, responded when
challenged again in the stretch and drew clear under some urging.
SILENT KINGDOM angled in and prompted the pace outside the winner,
bid alongside that one again in the stretch, could not match strides
but was clearly second best. SKIPPADOO broke a bit slowly, settled
off the rail, came three deep into the stretch and picked up the
show. WENDY'S ON TO ME stalked the pace three deep then outside,
went between horses on the backstretch, continued off the inside
into the stretch and lacked the needed rally. RUN FOR DESSERT
unhurried off the rail then outside a rival, came out four wide into
the stretch and improved position some in the stretch. NOSSA CANCAO
(BRZ) angled in and saved ground off the pace, remained inside and
did not rally. SCARLETT MEMORIES stalked three deep then four wide
on the backstretch and into the second turn, continued four wide
into the stretch and weakened. DOLLY WELLS (ARG) angled in early and
stalked the pace inside, weakened in the stretch. CRYSTAL HOUSE
tracked the leaders a bit off the rail then between horses, dropped
back some on the second turn and had little left for the stretch.

MAL'S MAGIC was unhurried early and allowed to just
settle in the back of the pack, started a run going into the far
turn then angled out four wide on the far turn, got clear running
room in the stretch and made a powerful surge to take command in
late stretch and proved best. PANCHO'S QUEEN dueled for the early
lead from the inside, drew clear in upper stretch but could not
withstand MAL'S MAGIC late surge in the stretch but held the place
safe. TIME FOR JOY was on the inside and saving ground on the first
turn then moved outside and rallied three wide on the far turn, made
a strong bid then hung in late stretch. ECTON'S LADY was inside and
saving ground on the far turn, angled out sharply to get clear
racing room in upper stretch and was gaining ground in late stretch.
LONESOME HILL chased the pace from the inside, made a bid on the far
turn then flattened out in the stretch. GENOSEARLYLEGACY bore out on
the first turn then dueled for the lead while two wide, was used up
and gave way in the stretch. RUBIATIC on the inside on the first
turn, hit the rail on backstretch after ducking in then bobbled,
rushed up and was in tight quarter's on the far turn and was blocked
in mid stretch. TM'S QUICKSILVER was no threat. SHINE ON ELIZABETH
chased the early pace while two wide and gave way in the stretch.
MISS HIGH ROLLER was outrun. CHARLEY B GOLD broke in the air then
was rushed up while three wide on the first turn and stopped on the
far turn. A steward's inquiry was held concerning the start. After
reviewing the film's, the steward's took no action.

Borrego wins Jockey Club Gold Cup in a blowout
by
Ralls
on Sat 01 Oct 2005 08:14 PM AKDT
NEW YORK (AP) -- Borrego turned the Jockey Club Gold Cup into a blowout.
Roaring past the field around the far turn, Borrego cruised to an easy
victory in Saturday's $1 million Gold Cup, one of five Grade 1 races at Belmont
Park with Breeders' Cup implications.
Borrego, one of three California horses in the field of eight, now becomes
one of the top contenders for the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic in four
weeks.
Borrego, winner of the $1 million Pacific Classic at Santa Anita on Aug.
21, was brought East by trainer Beau Greely for a race over the same track that
will host the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships on Oct. 29.
``This is two millions in a row,'' Greely said. ``He'll stay here for the
Breeders' Cup.''
Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Borrego raced in midpack as favorite Flower Alley
and stablemate Bishop Court Hill set the pace, with Lava Man just behind them.
By the time the field moved into the far turn, Gomez had unleashed Borrego
and he responded with a breathtaking, three-wide move to take command and win by
4 1/2 lengths under a hand ride.
Suave was second, followed by Sun King, Flower Alley, Imperialism, Grand
Reward, Lava Man and Bishop Court Hill.
Borrego, second to Lava Man in the Californian and the Hollywood Gold Cup,
beat his rival in the Pacific Classic in the best race of his career -- until
the Gold Cup.
The 4-year-old son of El Prado covered the 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.86 and
returned $10.60, $5 and $4.20. Flower Alley, trained by Todd Pletcher, came into
the Gold Cup off wins in the Jim Dandy and the Travers, but was not a factor
after setting the pace on a sunny day at Belmont.
Bishop Court Hill was entered as a ``rabbit'' in an effort to keep expected
pacesetter Lava Man busy in the early part of the race.
``Flower
Alley was just a little too fresh,'' Pletcher said. ``It had nothing to do with
the rabbit. Flower Alley was just too rank.''
Greely, meanwhile, is looking forward to an even bigger payday.
``We have the next level to step up to now,'' he said. ``I never looked at
the Breeders' Cup until right now. I like to think I have the horse to beat.''
Borrego picked up his fifth victory in 19 lifetime starts. The colt earned
$600,000 to boost his career winnings to just over $2 million.
Going into the weekend, the top BC Classic contender was Woodward winner
Saint Liam, with Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Afleet Alex given a good
chance to make it to the race after a strong workout Friday -- his first since
he was sidelined with an injury July 21.
Add Borrego and Rock Hard Ten to the list.
