Race Summary

SAINT LIAM settled just off the early pace, was well placed while four wide along the backstretch, was unhurried leaving the far turn, took up chase after the leaders while continuing wide entering the stretch, drew alongside FLOWER ALLEY to challenge in upper stretch, surged to the front leaving the furlong marker then edged clear under steady right hand urging. FLOWER ALLEY raced just behind the early leaders, launched a rally three wide on the turn, made a strong run to threaten in upper stretch, fought heads apart into deep stretch and yielded grudgingly. PERFECT DRIFT was unhurried while between horses, launched a bid leaving the turn, angled out in upper stretch then closed late to gain a share. SUPER FROLIC stumbled badly at the start, was unhurried for six furlongs, closed ground steadily along the rail to reach contention on the turn then finished willingly along the inside. SUAVE pressed the pace from outside for a mile, battled heads apart for the lead in upper stretch then weakened from his early efforts. CHOCTAW NATION was outrun early while saving ground, swung six wide while gaining on the turn then finished evenly. STARCRAFT (NZ) failed to mount a serious rally while racing wide. SIR SHACKLETON never reached contention while wide on the turn. SUN KING dueled along the rail for a mile and gave way. BORREGO was outrun early, lodged a mild five wide move between horses on the turn and flattened out. ORATORIO (IRE) saved ground to no avail. JACK SULLIVAN never reached contention. A BIT O'GOLD raced wide throughout.

Borrego has arrived at Belmont

The Triple Crown trail beckoned last year, and Beau Greely traveled down it
with Borrego. After leaving their home base of California, they made stops
in Louisiana and Arkansas, before moving on to the Kentucky Derby and
Preakness Stakes. But the journey ended there, before going to Belmont
Park.

A year later, they have arrived.

When 2005 dawned, Greely - who trains, co-owns, and is one of the breeders
of Borrego - decided to have a travel schedule opposite of last year. He
and
Borrego would stay home in California the entire year until the fall, then
go to New York. The result is that Borrego is thriving as he nears his
biggest race of the year, the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 29
at
Belmont Park. He comes off successive victories in $1 million races, the
Pacific Classic at Del Mar and the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.

"I'm pretty excited," Greely said from New York. "It's a good spot to be
in.
It's one of the things you dream about as a kid."

Borrego, 4, always has raced with the best of the division. He was second
in
the Louisiana Derby to Wimbledon, second to Smarty Jones in the Arkansas
Derby, third to Rock Hard Ten in the Santa Anita Handicap, and second to
Lava Man in the Hollywood Gold Cup. He also was second in the Super Derby,
Sham Stakes, and El Cajon Stakes, and third in the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap.
When he came into the Pacific Classic, he had placed in stakes races eight
times, but had never won a stakes race. He had three wins - against maidens
and twice in allowance company - from 17 starts. He was widely perceived as
an underachiever.

Not any more. As good as he ran in the Pacific Classic, Borrego took it to
another level in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, inhaling his rivals and winning
under wraps.

"That race was special," Greely said. "It wasn't just a Breeders' Cup prep.
It's a huge race on its own, especially with a horse you want to be a
stallion. He was doing that well, but he fooled me, in a good way.

"I always knew he was that good. I just wondered when he'd show it," Greely
said. "He'd never run a bad race against a good horse. I'm not bragging.
It's not like I did a great training job. It's just that the horse came
into
his own. He matured, and got better."

In fact, Borrego may have been an overachiever last year. Greely, 34, has
been training on his own for eight years, but is an old soul. He comes from
a prominent Kentucky family and worked as an assistant to Richard Mandella.
Patience, at least in terms of training, was drilled into him. Since
Borrego
was a May foal and didn't even have his actual third birthday until after
the Preakness, Greely never set out to turn him into a Triple Crown
contender. Borrego just kept taking the necessary steps, and Greely kept
going along for the ride until it became apparent, after the Preakness,
that
Borrego was not quite ready for prime time.

"I think the others in front of him were just a little better in terms of
ability at that time, and they were a little more mature age-wise," Greely
said.

After failing to win in eight starts last year, Borrego has won three times
in seven starts this year and has finished out of the money just once.
Staying at home the first nine months of the year has left Borrego, a son
of
El Prado, fresh for his late-season objectives.

"There was no need to travel. It's just more stress on a horse," Greely
said. "And when you have a handicap horse in California, why leave unless
you're dodging someone? He ran in the Big 'Cap, the Gold Cup, the preps for
those races. And he was right there."

Now, Greely is just marking time until the Classic. He had scheduled a work
for Wednesday at Belmont, but scratched that because of the wet weather.
It's a minor inconvenience. Borrego has never been a fancy work horse, and
considering he has raced all year and just won over the track, it's not
like
Greely is playing catch up. No, the management of Borrego the first nine
months of the year is paying dividends now.

"I could not be happier," Greely said.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Borrego turned the Jockey Club Gold Cup into a blowout.

Roaring past the field around the far turn, Borrego cruised to an easy victory in Saturday's $1 million Gold Cup, one of five Grade 1 races at Belmont Park with Breeders' Cup implications.

Borrego, one of three California horses in the field of eight, now becomes one of the top contenders for the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic in four weeks.

Borrego, winner of the $1 million Pacific Classic at Santa Anita on Aug. 21, was brought East by trainer Beau Greely for a race over the same track that will host the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships on Oct. 29.

``This is two millions in a row,'' Greely said. ``He'll stay here for the Breeders' Cup.''

Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Borrego raced in midpack as favorite Flower Alley and stablemate Bishop Court Hill set the pace, with Lava Man just behind them.

By the time the field moved into the far turn, Gomez had unleashed Borrego and he responded with a breathtaking, three-wide move to take command and win by 4 1/2 lengths under a hand ride.

Suave was second, followed by Sun King, Flower Alley, Imperialism, Grand Reward, Lava Man and Bishop Court Hill.

Borrego, second to Lava Man in the Californian and the Hollywood Gold Cup, beat his rival in the Pacific Classic in the best race of his career -- until the Gold Cup.

The 4-year-old son of El Prado covered the 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.86 and returned $10.60, $5 and $4.20. Flower Alley, trained by Todd Pletcher, came into the Gold Cup off wins in the Jim Dandy and the Travers, but was not a factor after setting the pace on a sunny day at Belmont.

Bishop Court Hill was entered as a ``rabbit'' in an effort to keep expected pacesetter Lava Man busy in the early part of the race.

``Flower Alley was just a little too fresh,'' Pletcher said. ``It had nothing to do with the rabbit. Flower Alley was just too rank.''

Greely, meanwhile, is looking forward to an even bigger payday.

``We have the next level to step up to now,'' he said. ``I never looked at the Breeders' Cup until right now. I like to think I have the horse to beat.''

Borrego picked up his fifth victory in 19 lifetime starts. The colt earned $600,000 to boost his career winnings to just over $2 million.

Going into the weekend, the top BC Classic contender was Woodward winner Saint Liam, with Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Afleet Alex given a good chance to make it to the race after a strong workout Friday -- his first since he was sidelined with an injury July 21.

Add Borrego and Rock Hard Ten to the list.

BORREGO was outrun early, picked it up when called on, swept past the field while four wide on the second turn, drew away when asked and was taken in hand, galloping home in handy fashion. SUAVE stumbled at the start, raced close up along the inside while in hand, came wide into the stretch and finished gamely while no real threat to the winner. SUN KING raced close up early while between rivals, came wide into the stretch and had no rally. FLOWER ALLEY showed good speed while in hand, contested the pace while between rivals and tired along the inside in the stretch. IMPERIALISM was outrun early, put in a three wide run on the second turn and tired in the stretch. GRAND REWARD was hustled along outside, raced four wide and tired in the stretch. LAVA MAN bobbled at the start, chased the pace while three wide and tired after three quarters. BISHOP COURT HILL argued the pace along the inside and tired entering the second turn.

Borrego doing well after Pacific Classic win

Borrego (El Prado [Ire]), who earned his first stakes win when annexing Sunday's Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar by a half-length, was in good condition at Santa Anita on Monday morning. Trainer Beau Greely said that the reality of winning the event was just starting to sink in.

"It was a great run, and, obviously, it's great to win a race of this quality," Greely said. "It's one of the biggest races in the country. I'm really proud of him."

Greely said the four-year-old's ultimate goal is the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Belmont Park on October 29, but that the chestnut might make a possible start in the Goodwood Breeders' Cup H. (G2) on October 1 at Santa Anita.

"We'll just watch him and see how he does and let him tell us which way to go," said the trainer.

Garrett Gomez became the first jockey to win the Pacific Classic three times, winning his previous two in back-to-back fashion with Skimming in 2000 and 2001.

"The third time didn't even cross my mind until later on.," Gomez said. "When I hit the wire, it felt like everything came back together and I was just grateful for the opportunity to be back in that position. It was a big sigh of relief, because Beau and I both believe in this horse, and it was special to win because of the faith we had in him. It was neat the way he came through for us and performed the way we knew he could perform."

Lava Man (Slew City Slew), who was vanned off the track after the race due to unsoundness in his right foreleg, was reported in good condition by Leandro Mora, Doug O'Neill's assistant trainer. Mora said that the Hollywood Gold Cup H. (G1) winner ate well Sunday night and walked on Monday morning.

Musique Toujours (Musique D'Enfer), also vanned off after the race, suffered a bowed tendon in his left foreleg.

"It's probably career threatening, but he'll be OK," trainer John Sadler said. "We'll know more about that in a few days. He'll be off a long time and it's too early to know whether he comes back to run again."

Del Mar recorded an all-time record handle and also registered an all-time high for one-day purses. Handle totaled $24,048,615, eclipsing the previous record of $22,857,782 set on August 15, 1998, also a Pacific Classic day. The one-day purse total for Sunday was $1,868,000.

Borrego wins Pacific Classic in upset

Associated Press

Borrego took a detour after crossing the finish line in the Pacific Classic. He walked into the winner's circle.

Borrego came from off the pace, went six horses wide in the stretch and won the $1 million race by a half-length Sunday in a thrilling finish at Del Mar.

Always close and consistent, the 4-year-old colt had finished either second or third eight times in major races during his career.

"Maybe it was our turn," majority owner Jon Kelly said. "I never expected to get here, so it's one big thrill."

Borrego held off Perfect Drift, another persistent older horse who finished second to Pleasantly Perfect in last year's race at the seaside track.

"They went quick up front and he came home with a big run, but Borrego came home with a bigger run," Perfect Drift's trainer Murray Johnson said.

Winning trainer Beau Greely was still dazed more than an hour after the race. It was his first victory in a $1 million race.

"I don't even know that it happened yet," he said. "Every trainer in the race came up to me in the winner's circle and said congratulations. That was special."

Lava Man was a neck back in third and Choctaw Nation was a head back in fourth.

Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Borrego covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:00.71 and paid $24.40, $8.80 and $4.20.

An exhilarated Gomez practically jumped out of the saddle crossing the wire, waving his whip with a flourish.

"I have so much confidence in this horse," he said. "I knew it was just a matter of time before he broke through and put the icing on the cake for us. I knew he had it and so did Beau. I'm just glad he finally showed it."

Perfect Drift returned $5.40 and $3.20, while Lava Man paid $2.60 to show.

The track set a single-day handle record of $24,048,615, bettering the old mark of $22,857,782 set Aug. 15, 1998.

Gomez credited fast-closing Choctaw Nation, who came up outside of Borrego in the stretch, for the win.

"It made my horse run harder," he said. "My horse just dug in and tried harder."

Lava Man, the 3-2 wagering favorite among 30,741 fans, was taken away by van after the race because of a problem with his right front leg, according to the stewards.

"He just fell apart the last 20 yards," said jockey Patrick Valenzuela, who jumped off after they crossed the wire. "He lost his air. I was concerned about him. I didn't know if he was hurt or not, but I didn't want any weight on him if he was."

Trainer Doug O'Neill said Lava Man walked on and off the van fine. "Maybe he had a little heat exhaustion," he said.

Pacesetter Lava Man was pressed most of the way by Surf Cat, and Valenzuela said it cost him a victory. He became the 13th favorite in the race's 15-year history to get beat.

"I'm trying the best I can to slow it down and he's on me," the jockey said.

Musique Toujours also was vanned off, with a problem in his left front leg. Jockey Jorge Chavez said the horse didn't pull up too well.

Super Frolic was fifth, Surf Cat sixth and Oceanus seventh, followed by Congrats, Island Fashion, Ace Blue and Musique Toujours.

Borrego had finished second five times in some of the country's biggest races, including the 2004 Louisiana, Arkansas and Super derbies. He chased Smarty Jones on last year's Triple Crown trail, winding up 10th in the Kentucky Derby and seventh in the Preakness.

Last month, Borrego was second to Lava Man in the Hollywood Gold Cup.

"I did think he would make a big run today," said Greely, who bred, trains and owns 12 percent of Borrego, along with 13 others. "He's been a really honest horse. We've always hoped he would develop. He is starting to grow into himself and develop."

The victory was Borrego's fourth career win in 18 starts.

Gomez has had his problems, too.

He was out of racing for nearly two years while battling substance abuse and returned last September. He won the riding title at Hollywood Park's spring-summer meeting and leads the Del Mar standings.

"I've always had faith in him," Greely said. "He got through his issues."

So did Borrego.

Borrego wins Pacific Classic

Borrego, runner-up to Smarty Jones in the 2004 Arkansas Derby, recorded his first career stakes victory by winning Sunday afternoon’s $1 million Grade I Pacific Classic at Del Mar in Del Mar, Calif.

Ridden by former Oaklawn regular Garrett Gomez, Borrego charged to the front on the outside in deep stretch to edge Perfect Drift by a half-length. Borrego’s only previous victory the past two years came in an optional allowance race at Santa Anita in February.

During that period, he finished second in the Grade II Louisiana Derby, Grade II Arkansas Derby, Grade II Super Derby and Grade I Hollywood Gold Cup and third in the Grade I Santa Anita Handicap and Grade II Mervin Leroy Handicap. The victory was the fourth in 18 lifetime starts for Borrego and increased his earnings to $1,452,090. The 4-yearold son of El Prado is trained by Beau Greely and among the colt’s 14 owners are Hot Springs native Rawleigh Ralls and Dennis Foster, formerly of Little Rock. "I did think he would make a big run today," said Greely, who co-bred and owns 12 percent of Borrego. "He’s been a really honest horse. We’ve always hoped he would develop. He is starting to grow into himself and develop." Lava Man, who nearly carried the field the entire distance, was a neck behind in third, with Choctaw Nation a

1 close fourth. The final time for the 1/4-mile event over a fast track was 2:00.71.

Lava Man fought Surf Cat through swift early splits of: 22.68,: 45.90, and 1:10.35 for three-quarters of a mile before Surf Cat began to tire and Super Frolic and Perfect Drift took up the chase.

As Super Frolic dropped out of contention, Choctaw Nation and Borrego challenged. Choctaw Nation had every opportunity under Victor Espinoza in a blanket finish.

Sent off at 11-1, Borrego paid $24.40, $8.80 and $4.20. Perfect Drift, who finished second in the Pacific Classic for the second consecutive year, returned $5.40 and $3.20. Lava Man paid $2.60 to show.

Super Frolic, Surf Cat, Oceanus, Congrats, Island Fashion, Ace Blue and Musique Toujour completed the order of finish. Island Fashion competed in Oaklawn’s Apple Blossom Handicap for older fillies and mares the past two years.

Edited Del Mar release
Borrego, multiple graded-stakes performer and runner-up to Lava Man in the Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I), wound up his preparations for Sunday's $1-million, grade I Pacific Classic with a solid five furlong work in 1:01.40 at Santa Anita.

Trainer C. Beau Greely said, "It was just what we wanted. He did it very well, and now it's on to the Pacific Classic."

Greely said the 4-year-old son of El Prado would be shipped to Del Mar following training hours Wednesday.

Choctaw Nation, fourth-place finisher in the 2004 Pacific Classic, will complete his work for the race Tuesday with a five furlong work over the seaside oval.

Last year's Pacific Classic runner-up, Perfect Drift, was scheduled to arrive at the California track Monday afternoon following a flight from Louisville, Ky.

The 6-year-old gelded son of Dynaformer trained by Murray Johnson has a record of 11 wins, eight seconds and four thirds in 31 career starts, with purse earning of $3,473,040. That means a $600,000 payday for winning the Pacific Classic would send him over the $4 million mark in earnings.

The others expected to line up for the Pacific Classic: Ace Blue, Congrats, Island Fashion, Lava Man, Musique Toujours, Super Frolic and Surf Cat. Surf Cat, as a 3-year-old, gets a seven-pound weight break and will carry 117 pounds, and the mare Island Fashion will get in at 119. All the others will carry 124.

The riding assignments are as follows: Ace Blue, David Flores; Borrego, Garrett Gomez; Choctaw Nation, Victor Espinoza; Congrats, Tyler Baze; Lava Man, Patrick Valenzuela, Musique Toujours, Jorge Chavez; Perfect Drift, Mark Guidry; Super Frolic, Jason Lumpkins; Surf Cat, Alex Solis; and Island Fashion, no rider named yet.

Race Summary

GREEK SUN off a bit slowly, settled outside a rival, moved up outside leaving the second turn and five wide into the stretch and closed gamely under some left handed urging to get up late. LAURA'S LUCKY BOY forced the pace between horses, took a short lead three deep into the stretch and held on gamely but was caught late. HENDRIX bumped into the first turn, raced close up stalking the pace inside, bid along the rail in the stretch and continued willingly to just hold third. IMPERIALISM unhurried outside a rival then along the inside, came out on the second turn and five wide into the stretch and finished well. SEMI LOST between foes early, was bumped into the first turn, stalked three deep, came four wide into the stretch and was outfinished. TERROPLANE (FR) prompted the pace three deep, fell back a bit into the stretch and lacked the needed response. ON THE ACORN (GB) saved ground off the pace, came out into the stretch and could not summon the necessary late kick. WHILLY (IRE) sped to the early lead and angled in, was briefly clear leaving the first turn, set a pressured pace inside, came out into the stretch, fought back between horses in midstretch and weakened some late. BORREGO pulled early, chased between foes and was bumped between rivals into the first turn, continued a bit off the rail leaving the backstretch and on the second turn, lacked room off heels in deep stretch, angled in and lacked the needed response.

Race Summary

FANTASTICAT unhurried early, advanced quickly toward the fore in the two path late in the second turn, angled out just a bit to engage the leader entering the stretch, eventually put that foe away inside the furlong grounds, enough left to hold the runner up safe in the waning strides. BORREGO allowed the speed to go early, began to move closer on the outside midway on the second turn, reached a striking position entering the stretch, slowly gaining on the winner in the late going. BRITT'S JULES set or forced the pace along the inside, shook off the other speed turning for home, gave ground grudgingly to the top two. IMPERIALISM off a bit slow, raced back and to the inside, moved out and around a tiring foe along the rail late in the second turn, roused soon after, lacked the necessary response after moving back to the inside and finished evenly. CABALLERO NEGRO settled off the pace and the inside, asked for some run three wide into the stretch, lacked a response. CRYPTOGRAPH void of early foot, came five wide into the stretch, also failed to produce a late kick. XIRIUS raced in the second flight inside, weakened. MR. JESTER four wide into the stretch when well off the pace, no rally. SOUTH AFRICA dueled off the inside, gave way suddenly with a quarter to run, stopped in the drive.

Race Summary

PERFECT MOON had good early speed and dueled inside, inched away leaving the second turn and drew clear under a strong hand ride. BORREGO stalked the pace inside, swung out into the stretch and was second best. COURAGEOUS ACT had speed between foes then stalked off the rail, continued outside the runner-up leaving the second turn and bested the others. FAIRLY RUN (FR) off a bit slowly, settled off the inside, went three deep on the second turn and into the stretch, drifted in and lacked a further response. POINT OF FLIGHT pulled his way between horses to chase the pace, found the rail on the second turn, came out into the stretch and weakened. VALID AGAIN chased three deep then outside a rival on the second turn, came out into the stretch and had little left. JIMMY'S INSTINCT broke awkwardly, a bit in the air and was squeezed, went up between foes then three deep early on the first turn, dueled outside the winner, dropped back between foes on the second turn and gave way.

View Article  Borrego to get well deserved break

After running 10th in the Kentucky Derby and 7th in the Preakness, Borrego is back home in sunny southern California where he's earned a short break from racing.

"He never really fired in either of the Triple Crown races" says Beau Greely, Borrego's trainer.  "He came out of both races really sound, and we'll give him a rest and then shoot for the big summer events like the Travers Stakes or the Haskell Invitational".
